Carta executoria de hidalguía a pedimiento de Juan Hortiz Canpoy vecino de la villa del Haraal, 1620 July 10.

Petition for nobility status by Juan Ortiz Campoy, resident of El Arahal, in the province of Seville, son of Juan Ortiz and Juana de Campoy of the town of Vera. In the typical manner, witnesses, many from the nearby towns of Vera, Velez-Rubio, and Velez-Blanco, are called to testify in support of Ortiz, including Francisco López de Ayora, Baltasar de Avila, Andrés Pérez de Meca, Pedro de la Torre, Pedro Torrente, and Pedro Alfonso de Argoyanes. The final decision in favor of Ortiz is issued by the president and oidores of the Audiencia in Granada on July 10, 1620; the "carta executoria" is dated Sept. 14, 1620, although it lacks signatures.

Edward Everett Ayer (Nov. 16, 1841 -- May 3, 1927), businessman, bibiliophile and collector. In 1860 he joined an overland expedition to California. He stopped in Nevada, where he worked at a quarz mill in Silver City, but soon moved on to San Francisco. He remained there, working at a planing mill, until the outbread of the Civil War. He enlisted in the 1st Regiment of California Cavalry Volunteers, and was later transferred to the 1st Regiment of New Mexico Infantry. Ayer served in many posts ...
